Animal Crossing 3.0 Update Brings Free Content and Switch 2 Enhancements

A few years passed since the last major update to Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Nintendo previously stated no additional content would be added to the game. Thankfully, they were wrong about that statement. Players will experience a fresh take on their island getaway immediately. A massive free update to Version 3.0 arrives soon. This Animal Crossing 3.0 Update will be available for everyone.

Release Timing and New Crossover Villagers

The Version 3.0 Update will be released on January 15, 2026. The Nintendo Switch 2 Edition of the game launches on the same day. The update will install automatically to any copy of ACNH. This occurs if the copy is connected to the internet easily. Much of the new content is part of the free 3.0 update itself. It does not require a Switch 2 console to enjoy the changes.
New villagers are coming as crossover collaborations immediately. These include characters from The Legend of Zelda and Splatoon. Players will need to own applicable Amiibos to unlock them successfully. Amiibos unlock entire sets of themed collaboration items. This includes furniture and clothing items for the island. Resetti will show up to help with cleaning services immediately. Kapp’n also brings his whole family to run the new resort hotel.

Island Features and Switch 2 Enhancements

The most obvious new feature is the resort hotel opening on the pier. Players decorate guest rooms and host visitors there actively. Luna is expanding her operations with Slumber Islands immediately. Users with a Nintendo Switch Online membership design and save up to three separate islands. They can even help decorate and build on friend’s islands quickly. Other free features include upgraded home storage and bulk crafting.
Players with a Nintendo Switch 2 can upgrade their game immediately. Enhancements include improved resolution to 4K in TV mode. The game also supports mouse controls for easier decorating. The Switch 2 microphone operates the in-game megaphone successfully. Multiplayer sessions can now include up to 12 players online seamlessly.
