Arif Habib Consortium to Acquire Full Control of PIA, Boosting Tourism

Pakistan International Airlines is moving toward full privatization. A consortium led by the Arif Habib Group plans to acquire the remaining 25 percent government stake. This follows their purchase of 75 percent shares in December 2025 for Rs135 billion.
The remaining shares are valued at Rs45 billion. The consortium aims to complete the acquisition by late April or early May 2026. This will give them full control of the national flag carrier.
Shahid Ali Habib, CEO of Arif Habib Ltd, confirmed the transformation plan. Government-appointed board members will be removed from decision-making. This shift is expected to increase operational efficiency and cut costs.

A New Era for Aviation Competitiveness

The privatization will fundamentally change how PIA operates. With full private control, the focus will be on profitability and performance. Customer experience will become a central priority.
Improved service quality is essential for competitiveness. The airline must compete with regional and international carriers. A leaner, more efficient PIA can finally do that.
The consortium has clear plans for the future. These include fleet expansion with more modern aircraft. New routes will be added to serve growing demand.

Transforming Pakistan’s Tourism Landscape

A stronger PIA means a stronger tourism sector. Reliable, affordable, and efficient air services are tourism’s backbone. Domestic and international travelers both depend on them.
Privatization is expected to increase international arrivals. Better connectivity to key tourist destinations will follow. Enhanced regional access will open up new markets.
Pakistan’s rich cultural heritage and natural beauty are waiting. From the ancient ruins of Mohenjo-Daro to the valleys of Hunza, the country has immense potential. A modernized PIA can help unlock it.

Boosting Domestic and International Travel

Domestic tourism will see significant benefits. Improved access to remote regions is a game-changer. Heritage villages and mountainous areas become reachable for more Pakistanis.
Local tourism businesses will capitalize on better travel options. More visitors mean thriving local economies. Pakistan’s hidden gems will finally get the attention they deserve.
For international tourists, the experience will improve dramatically. A reliable, customer-focused airline makes travel planning easier. Destinations like Lahore’s Badshahi Mosque become more accessible.

Economic Impact and Future Growth

The privatization’s impact extends beyond the airline itself. Increased tourism flows generate revenue across multiple sectors. Hotels, restaurants, transport, and local guides all benefit.
Pakistan’s position as a South Asian destination will strengthen. Improved tourism infrastructure attracts repeat visitors. Word-of-mouth recommendations grow the market organically.
The consortium’s commitment to quality service is key. Modern aircraft reduce operating costs while improving comfort. Customer focus builds trust and loyalty among travelers.
This acquisition is a major milestone for both PIA and Pakistan. It revives a loss-making airline and transforms it into a competitive entity. More importantly, it positions tourism for unprecedented growth. With better access, service, and infrastructure, Pakistan is finally ready to welcome the world.
