Australia Revokes Visa After Neo-Nazi Rally Appearance

Australia Revokes Visa After Neo-Nazi Rally Appearance

Australia revokes visa rights for a South African man after he joined a neo-Nazi rally in Sydney. The man, Matthew Gruter, attended an anti-Jewish protest outside the New South Wales parliament. The event took place earlier this month and involved members of the National Socialist Network.

What Happened at the Rally

Gruter stood among about 60 men dressed in black. They held a banner that read “Abolish the Jewish lobby.” Reports say the protest lasted less than 20 minutes. However, it still drew national concern due to rising right-wing extremism.
Protesters also chanted “blood and honour,” a slogan linked to the Hitler Youth. In addition, witnesses said the protest had legal permission. The rally sparked strong public reaction as Australia continues to clamp down on extremist behaviour.
Earlier this year, the government made the Nazi salute punishable by a mandatory prison term. Officials say the measure aims to prevent hate groups from gaining influence.

Government Responds to the Incident

Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke confirmed the decision to cancel Gruter’s visa. He explained that visa holders are guests in Australia. Therefore, they must follow laws that protect the community.
Burke said, “If a guest turns up to show hatred and wreck the household, they can be told it’s time to go home.” His comments reflect a broader government push against hateful conduct.
Gruter moved to Australia in 2022 with his wife. He works as a civil engineer, according to local reports. The Sydney Morning Herald states that he is a senior member of the National Socialist Network in New South Wales.
Authorities say the cancellation is part of efforts to curb extremist activities. As a result, more cases may face similar actions in the future.
