A historic peace agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia has opened new opportunities for the South Caucasus, positioning the region as an emerging tourism hub. With borders reopening after decades of tension, the area is being promoted as a single, interconnected travel destination, allowing visitors to experience multiple countries within one journey.
Florian Sengstschmid, CEO of the Azerbaijan Tourism Board, highlighted the potential, stating that “Peace allows the South Caucasus to be promoted as a single, connected tourism region.” He explained that longstanding political and logistical barriers have made it difficult for tour operators and travelers to combine destinations. With these obstacles removed, the tourism industry can now innovate and grow.
Azerbaijan is expected to lead the way thanks to recent investments in airports, modern hotels, and other key infrastructure. Sengstschmid emphasized that tour operators, airlines, hoteliers, and investors stand to benefit first as travel demand grows. Improved connectivity through new air, road, and rail links is viewed as essential, shortening travel times and making multi-country itineraries more practical for international visitors.
Azerbaijan’s location at the crossroads of Europe and Asia strengthens its role as a natural gateway. The peace deal, which includes a permanent ceasefire, mutual recognition of sovereignty, and full diplomatic relations, also boosts confidence in regional safety. This stability is expected to reshape international perceptions of the South Caucasus, making it a more attractive and secure option for global travelers.
The treaty also outlines plans for a 43-kilometer transit corridor through southern Armenia. This route will connect Azerbaijan proper with its exclave Nakhchivan and, through Türkiye, extend further into European markets.
Beyond infrastructure, the agreement unlocks opportunities for cultural, adventure, wellness, and business tourism. With the South Caucasus now able to present itself as a unified destination, Azerbaijan is set to become a hub where travelers begin their journey to explore the broader region.
