Binali Disaster: Deadly Rubbish Slide Leaves Dozens Missing in Cebu

The Binalie disaster has shaken Cebu City in the central Philippines. A massive pile of rubbish suddenly collapsed on Thursday. As a result, a 22-year-old woman lost her life.
The incident happened at a large dumping site used by the city. Many people worked there during the early hours. Therefore, fears for those missing remain high.
Rescue teams acted quickly after the collapse. They pulled 12 injured sanitation workers from the debris. In addition, hospitals admitted them for urgent care.

Search Efforts and Rising Concerns

More than 30 people remain unaccounted for after the incident. Officials believe many of them worked at the site. However, unstable conditions have slowed rescue efforts.
Cebu City’s mayor warned of further danger. He said more rubbish could slide at any moment. As a result, teams must move carefully.
Heavy machinery now supports manual searches. Emergency crews continue working through difficult terrain. Meanwhile, families wait anxiously for news.

Questions Over Waste Practices

The cause of the collapse remains unclear. However, a local councilor pointed to weak handling systems. He said long-term issues likely played a role.
Poor planning and overcrowding may have increased the risk. For example, rubbish piles often exceeded safe limits. Therefore, safety checks may have failed.
Environmental groups renewed calls for reform. They want better oversight and safer disposal methods. In addition, they urge stronger protection for sanitation workers.
Authorities promised a full investigation. They also pledged support for affected families. The community now seeks answers and accountability.
