Black River Devastated as Hurricane Melissa Leaves Jamaica Reeling

Muddied roads are being walked by survivors as wreckage is searched for food. Damaged stores are being entered in desperate attempts to find bottled water and supplies.

Black River Struggles After Hurricane Melissa

A rising death toll is being reported while loved ones continue to be searched for by residents. Their survival is being fought for days after Hurricane Melissa made this Jamaican port city the center of devastation across the Caribbean.

Chaos and Desperation Grip the City

A state of chaos has been lived through for three days by residents since the storm struck with fierce power. It has been recorded as one of the most powerful category five hurricanes in the region’s history.
Nearly everything has been destroyed by Melissa’s winds and storm surge. Roads have been made impassable, and electricity and water supplies have been cut off. As a result, desperation and isolation have been felt more deeply by the community.
Capsized boats can be seen along curbs, while split buildings and twisted metal hang from trees. Crushed vehicles have been left scattered across the streets.
No aid trucks have yet been seen in the area, according to residents who spoke to the BBC. Food has been scavenged from debris as survival becomes the only goal. Supermarkets have been entered, and food and water have been thrown from rooftops to waiting crowds with outstretched hands.
