Bristol Secures £2.3M Investment to Boost Cycling, Walking and Green Travel for Visitors and Locals

Bristol is about to undergo a major transformation in how people move around the city thanks to a £2.3 million investment from the UK Department for Transport’s Active Travel Fund. Approved on September 11, 2025, this funding will deliver new walking, cycling, and wheeling routes that make travel greener, safer, and more accessible for both residents and visitors.
One of the most significant projects is the conversion of Prince Street Bridge into a pedestrian- and cycling-only route. Currently serving over 24,000 walkers and cyclists daily alongside just 1,700 vehicles, the redesign will create a safer, car-free crossing in the heart of the city.
Bath Road will also see new connections between Temple Quarter Enterprise Zone and the A4 Bath Bridges area. With improved paths, bridges, and cycling routes, thousands of current users will gain smoother access, while tourists can reach popular destinations such as the SS Great Britain, Wapping Wharf, and M Shed more easily.
To encourage more sustainable travel, the city will expand School Streets programs to reduce congestion outside schools and offer free bike loans, training, and maintenance. Secure cycle hangars will also be installed across Bristol, helping residents and visitors explore the city by bike.
These improvements are part of a larger £4.78 million investment in the West of England. The projects aim not only to reduce traffic and pollution but also to promote tourism by making key attractions more accessible without relying on cars.
By prioritizing eco-friendly travel, Bristol is positioning itself as a leader in sustainable tourism. The upgrades will make it easier to discover the city at a slower pace while supporting healthier lifestyles and a cleaner environment.
