China Develops Bone-02: A Fast-Acting Biodegradable Glue for Broken Bones

Medical researchers in Zhejiang Province, China, have introduced Bone-02, a groundbreaking adhesive that could reshape the way fractures are treated. The glue is designed to bond broken bones within two to three minutes, offering a rapid and minimally invasive alternative to conventional implants.
The team drew inspiration from oysters, which can anchor themselves firmly to wet and slippery surfaces. This natural mechanism enabled scientists to engineer a medical glue that remains effective even in blood-rich surgical conditions, where most traditional adhesives fail.
Unlike metal plates or screws that often require a second surgery for removal, Bone-02 is biodegradable. It gradually breaks down in the body as the fracture heals, leaving behind no foreign material. This feature not only reduces the risk of complications but also improves patient recovery by avoiding additional procedures.
In early clinical use, the adhesive has been applied to more than 150 patients. Tests have demonstrated impressive performance, with bonding strength surpassing 400 pounds, a shear strength of 0.5 MPa, and a compressive strength of 10 MPa. Such durability suggests that Bone-02 can withstand the stresses of everyday movement while supporting natural bone healing.
While large-scale trials are still underway, initial results are highly encouraging. Experts believe this innovation could significantly reduce recovery time, surgical risks, and healthcare costs. If proven effective on a wider scale, Bone-02 may emerge as a safer and quicker alternative to traditional bone implants, transforming orthopedic surgery worldwide.
