China Tests AR Headsets to Boost Tank Crews’ Battlefield Vision

China is developing a new augmented reality (AR) headset system designed to enhance visibility and situational awareness for its tank crews. The technology, currently undergoing trials, could give armored units a major advantage by allowing soldiers to “see through” the thick armor of their vehicles.

The system works by linking the headsets to external cameras and sensors mounted on tanks and other armored platforms. This setup provides crews with a seamless 360-degree field of view, overcoming one of the biggest limitations of operating inside heavily armored vehicles.

On the display, soldiers can see not only live video feeds but also critical information such as vehicle health, ammunition supplies, and target data. The AR interface even allows weapons to be aimed through head or eye movements, a concept similar to the targeting system used in the U.S. Apache attack helicopter.

Chinese state media reports indicate that the technology has already been tested on the ZTZ-201 main battle tank and several other vehicles. Trials demonstrated effectiveness in both daylight and nighttime conditions, as well as in open terrain and urban settings. Beyond individual vehicle use, the system can also share data between tanks, creating a networked picture of the battlefield.

Defense analysts note that while it is unclear whether the AR system has entered full operational service, its repeated testing suggests the technology is close to wider deployment. If fielded, it could significantly improve crew performance by reducing blind spots, enhancing communication, and enabling faster, more precise targeting.

For China’s military modernization efforts, AR integration marks another step in leveraging digital technologies to close the gap with advanced Western forces, signaling the growing role of immersive tech on future battlefields.
