Crew-12 Astronauts Begin Quarantine For Historic SpaceX Station Mission
The four astronauts of NASA’s SpaceX Crew-12 mission have started their final quarantine. This important step begins their journey to the International Space Station (ISS). They are isolating at Johnson Space Center in Houston for two weeks. Therefore, they can protect their health before launch.
Who Is On The Crew-12 Team?
This mission features a diverse international crew. NASA astronauts Jessica Meir and Jack Hathaway are on the team. They are joined by ESA astronaut Sophie Adenot and Roscosmos cosmonaut Andrey Fedyaev. In addition, this flight is a first for two crew members. Both Adenot and Hathaway are embarking on their debut spaceflight.
Crew-12 could launch as early as February 11th. However, NASA has backup dates ready if needed. The crew will travel to Florida’s Kennedy Space Center on February 6th. They will continue their quarantine there. Finally, they will complete last-minute preparations.
Why Do Astronauts Quarantine?
NASA requires this quarantine for a very good reason. It helps prevent illness before and during the mission. The practice started during the Apollo moon missions. Now, crew contact is very limited. Even family visits require health screenings first.
Final Preparations Are Complete
Before quarantine, the crew finished critical spacecraft tests. They suited up and entered their SpaceX Dragon capsule. They checked their seats and all communication systems. As a result, they now know the spacecraft’s sounds and layout intimately.
The crew will spend about nine months on the ISS. They will conduct vital scientific research in orbit. Their mission highlights strong global partnership in space exploration. Everyone at NASA is excited for a successful launch.
