Dhaka Protest Hero Faces Deadly Violence

In July 2024, youth protests filled the streets. Students demanded change and justice. However, security forces responded with force. Rahat and his friend, Emam Hasan Taim Bhuiyan, hid in a tea stall. Police soon found them. Then officers dragged them outside and ordered them to run. Moments later, bullets flew. Bhuiyan collapsed after getting shot. Therefore, Rahat rushed to help him.He grabbed his friend and pulled him toward safety. Meanwhile, police kept firing. A bullet struck Rahat’s leg.Despite his injury, he tried to continue. However, the danger became too great. As a result, he had to leave his friend behind.
Later, doctors declared Bhuiyan dead. Rahat still struggles with that memory. In addition, he lives with physical and emotional scars.

From Student Protest to National Uprising

The viral video of Rahat spread quickly. People shared it online and in the streets. Therefore, anger and unity grew nationwide.Violence turned small protests into a mass movement. For example, workers, families, and elders joined students. Dhaka became the center of resistance.Within two weeks, pressure forced the government to fall. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina fled the country. As a result, Bangladesh entered a new political phase.
The United Nations later reported heavy losses. Up to 1,400 people died during the unrest. Most victims fell during security crackdowns. Human rights groups now call for accountability. They demand justice for victims and families. In addition, they urge reforms in policing. Rahat continues to speak about his experience. He hopes his story inspires peace and change. Most importantly, he wants his friend remembered as a hero.
