Digital Crime Crackdown: Punjab Expands CCD Powers to Fight Online Fraud

The Punjab government launched a digital crime crackdown after a sharp rise in online fraud cases. Officials approved new powers for the Crime Control Department, also known as CCD. The move aims to protect people from growing cyber threats.
Authorities said criminals increasingly target ordinary citizens. Salaried workers, small traders, and vulnerable groups often lose their life savings. As a result, public concern continues to rise across the province.
Officials also shared worrying details. Some fraud groups stole money from social welfare beneficiaries. In addition, certain gangs expanded into short-term kidnappings for ransom.

CCD Steps Up Action Against Fraud Networks

The government directed the CCD to take decisive action. The department will now lead operations against organised digital crime groups. These networks use mobile phones,
computers, and online platforms to steal money.
Officials said CCD teams will focus on dismantling entire criminal rings. Therefore, investigations will target both local and cross-border actors. The goal is to stop crimes at their source.
Recent CCD operations boosted confidence in the department. Officers successfully disrupted several major syndicates. As a result, the government decided to expand CCD authority.

Asset Seizures and Legal Action Planned

The crackdown also includes financial penalties. Authorities will begin legal proceedings to seize illegal assets. These assets are worth billions of rupees.
Officials said asset confiscation sends a strong message. Criminals will no longer profit from digital fraud. Moreover, financial pressure may prevent repeat offences.
The government urged citizens to stay alert. People should report suspicious calls and messages immediately. Awareness, strong enforcement, and swift action can reduce digital crime risks.
