ECP Forms Committee for Islamabad Local Government Elections

ECP Forms Committee for Islamabad Local Government Elections

The Election Commission of Pakistan has started preparations for the upcoming Islamabad local government elections after receiving a request from the Ministry of Interior. Officials moved quickly to begin the process. As a result, the commission formed a special committee to handle key election matters.
The commission also issued a formal notification explaining the committee’s structure and responsibilities. Authorities believe this step will speed up preparations. Therefore, planning for the polls in the federal capital has officially begun.

Committee Formed to Oversee Election Preparations

The Election Commission created a committee to supervise work related to the local government elections. The panel will operate from Islamabad and coordinate several important tasks. In addition, members will review administrative and legal requirements for the upcoming polls.
Muhammad Ali Randhawa will lead the committee as its convener. Meanwhile, Zafar Iqbal Hussain will serve as a member of the panel. The commission also included Nadeem Qasim and Irfan Nawaz Memon to support the process.
Together, the members will review key administrative matters. They will also ensure that preparations follow the legal framework for local body elections. As a result, officials expect smoother coordination between departments.
The committee will hold regular meetings in Islamabad. These discussions will help speed up the work and resolve technical issues quickly.

Delimitation, Maps and Rule Amendments

One major responsibility involves finalising notifications about town corporation boundaries. The committee will also determine the number of union councils in each area. This step will help define the electoral structure for the polls.
In addition, officials will prepare accurate maps and confirm official area names. These details must match the approved delimitation plans. Therefore, authorities want to ensure transparency and clarity in the election process.
The committee will also draft proposed amendments to election rules. These changes will relate to the ICT Local Government Conduct of Elections Rules 2015. Officials say the updates will align with provisions introduced through the ICT Local Government Amendment Ordinance 2026.
Overall, the preparations mark an important step toward organising local government elections in the federal capital.
