Five Charged in Fentanyl Network Linked to Robert De Niro’s Grandson’s Death

Five people were charged in connection with the 2023 overdose deaths of Robert De Niro’s grandson and two other 19-year-olds. A fentanyl distribution network targeting New York City youth was said by authorities to have been operated by the suspects.

Bruce Epperson, Eddie Barreto, Grant McIver, John Nicolas, and Roy Nicolas were named as the accused. Counterfeit prescription pills, laced with deadly fentanyl, were reportedly sold through social media.

Fentanyl Network Tied to Multiple Deaths

The deaths of Leandro De Niro-Rodriguez, Akira Stein (daughter of Blondie co-founder Chris Stein), and another unidentified victim were linked to the group. Instagram and Snapchat were said to have been used to reach teenagers and young adults.
“These tragedies reflect the rising danger of fentanyl-laced pills,” said a New York prosecutor’s spokesperson. “A pill that appears harmless can become fatal.”
Each suspect was charged with conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute controlled substances. Long prison sentences could be faced if convictions are made.
The case was seen as another reminder of the ongoing fentanyl crisis taking young lives across the U.S. Families and communities were urged to raise awareness about the risks of online drug sales.
