Fuel Price Hike in Pakistan Makes Travel More Expensive
Travel costs in Pakistan are going up. A recent fuel price hike is the main reason. Transport fares have increased across the country.
The government raised petroleum prices recently. As a result, transport operators increased passenger and freight fares by up to 20%. They cite higher diesel costs and rising operational expenses. This change affects millions of Pakistanis who use buses, taxis, and goods transport daily. The new fares are now active on many routes.
New Bus, Train, and Air Fares
Intercity Bus Fares Jump: Many major bus routes have already raised their prices. For example, an Islamabad to Lahore bus ticket now costs more. The previous fare was Rs1,700, but it is now Rs2,100. Similarly, the fare from Islamabad to Peshawar increased from Rs800 to Rs1,000. Private taxi and rickshaw drivers in cities like Islamabad and Rawalpindi have also increased their fares by 20%.
Freight and Rail Also Affected
The price surge does not just impact passenger travel. The Pakistan Goods Transport Alliance raised freight rates by around 20%. This increase will likely make transported goods more expensive. Therefore, it could add further pressure on inflation.
Pakistan Railways has also increased fares. Economy class tickets went up by about 5%. AC class fares increased by approximately 10%. These new railway fares took effect on March 9, 2026. Furthermore, airlines are adjusting ticket prices due to higher aviation fuel costs. Consequently, travel is now more expensive by road, rail, and air.
Impact on Daily Life
These latest fare increases come at a difficult time. Many households are already facing high living costs. With Eid approaching, the impact will be stronger for frequent travelers and workers who depend on transport.
Transport operators warn that more revisions could come. They say fares might increase further if fuel prices remain high. However, the government has not announced any official plans for more increases. For now, this situation clearly shows how fuel price fluctuations continue to shape Pakistan’s transport sector.
