Government Announces New Berths and Storage Expansion at Port Qasim to Boost Cement Exports

The government has announced a series of infrastructure upgrades at Port Qasim to strengthen Pakistan’s export potential, particularly in the cement and clinker sectors. The plan includes the construction of new berths, expansion of storage facilities, and repair of existing infrastructure to improve cargo handling capacity.
Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry shared the developments on Tuesday while chairing a high-level meeting.
According to the minister, a sub-committee comprising representatives from all major ports and led by the Port Qasim Authority (PQA) Chairman Rear Admiral Syed Moazzam Ilyas has finalized key recommendations to accelerate port efficiency and exports.
Chaudhry emphasized the urgency of adding two new multi-purpose berths at Port Qasim to facilitate smoother and faster handling of export consignments. “To support export logistics, plans are also underway to build an additional storage facility at Port Qasim with a capacity of 30,000 metric tons,” he stated. He further confirmed that the project is expected to commence by the end of 2025, once all formalities are completed.
In addition to the new facilities, the minister revealed that permanent repair work on the existing storage infrastructure will be carried out. The repair process is expected to be completed within four to five months, by December 2025, ensuring uninterrupted operations.
Discussions also highlighted potential collaboration between the Port Qasim Authority and the All Pakistan Cement Manufacturers Association (APCMA) to utilize the Sahiwal berth, currently underused, for clinker exports.
Chaudhry reiterated that these measures are part of a broader maritime development strategy, designed to increase Pakistan’s export competitiveness, improve logistics, and contribute to long-term economic growth.
