Government Signals Jail Transfer Debate Over Imran Khan Protests

The federal government has opened a jail transfer debate following daily protests near Adiala Jail. Prime Minister’s Coordinator Ikhtiar Wali Khan addressed the issue at a press conference in Islamabad. He said authorities may move Imran Khan to another province.
He explained that constant demonstrations have disrupted daily life for nearby residents. Therefore, officials now review options to restore order. He also claimed party leaders favor the move for political gain.

Government cites security and stability concerns

Ikhtiar Wali Khan accused the party of promoting unrest through protests. He said supporters had created disorder under the banner of political expression. As a result, the government saw no room for further talks.
He added that communication channels with the former leader had closed completely. According to him, even local representatives refuse engagement. He stressed the need to separate those supporting stability from those challenging it.
Furthermore, he alleged attempts to manufacture political victimhood. He claimed protest actions aimed to force administrative decisions. He described this approach as harmful to national unity.

Military, KP government, and wider allegations

The coordinator linked his comments to recent remarks by the military spokesperson. Last week, DG ISPR Lt Gen Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry criticised hostile messaging against the army. He described such narratives as damaging and misleading.
Ikhtiar Wali Khan also accused the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government of enabling criminal networks. He claimed authorities ignored illegal activities in parts of the province. Additionally, he alleged law enforcement had detained vehicles tied to senior officials in narcotics cases.
Meanwhile, Lt Gen Sharif warned against personalising national politics. He questioned whether critics aimed to weaken institutions for external interests. He said some figures reject the system only when they lose power.
He concluded that such thinking harms democratic balance. He urged restraint and responsibility from all political actors.
