Govt Approves Wheat Policy 2025-26 to Ensure Fair Prices for Farmers
The government has approved the Wheat Policy 2025-26 after a high-level meeting led by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. Chief ministers from all provinces, along with other key officials, attended the meeting.
PM Shehbaz called wheat the backbone of Pakistan’s agricultural economy. He said it was not only the main food source but also the biggest income driver for millions of farmers.
He stressed that farmers are the strength of the economy and deserve full support. Therefore, the government aims to ensure that they receive fair returns for their hard work.
Ensuring Fair Prices and Food Security
The prime minister said the new policy was created after detailed consultations with provincial governments and farmer groups. This inclusive approach, he added, guarantees that both farmer and public interests are protected.
He appreciated the cooperation of provincial governments in developing the plan. According to the policy, both federal and provincial authorities will build strategic wheat reserves of about 6.2 million tons from the 2025-26 crop.
The government will buy wheat at Rs3,500 per maund (40 kg). This price matches global rates and ensures fair profit for local farmers. As a result, it helps maintain market stability and encourages sustainable wheat production.
Stronger Coordination and Open Markets
The new policy removes restrictions on inter-provincial wheat movement, ensuring equal availability of the commodity nationwide.
In addition, a National Wheat Monitoring Committee will be formed. The federal minister for national food security will chair this committee, with representatives from all provinces. It will meet weekly and report directly to the prime minister to keep the policy on track.
PM Shehbaz expressed hope that the Wheat Policy 2025-26 will boost agricultural growth, increase farmer income, and secure the nation’s food future.
