Gul Plaza Fire Contained After 36-Hour Battle, Building at Collapse Risk

Firefighters finally controlled a massive blaze at Karachi’s Gul Plaza. They fought the fire for 36 grueling hours. However, the building is now extremely unstable. Officials warn it could collapse at any moment.
The fire broke out late Saturday night. It ravaged the multi-story shopping center through Sunday. The intense heat caused parts of the structure to collapse.

Rescue Efforts Continue

Teams have now extinguished the central fire. Cooling operations are currently underway. The chief fire officer ordered a stop to full firefighting. They are only clearing debris due to the severe collapse risk.
Rescuers recovered more bodies overnight. The death toll has risen to at least 14. Dozens of people remain unaccounted for. Police are tracing mobile phone signals to find them. They also set up a helpline for worried families.

Calls for Accountability Grow

Authorities promise a future investigation into the cause. Initial reports point to a possible electrical short circuit. Flammable materials inside a shop helped the fire spread rapidly.
The business community demands a judicial inquiry. Leaders question the building’s fire safety standards. They also ask if firefighters had adequate protective gear. Consequently, a petition has reached the Sindh High Court.
The provincial chief minister visited the site. He pledged compensation for the affected traders. The community now seeks answers and accountability for this devastating loss.
