Gul Plaza Fire Tragedy Leaves Dozens Dead and Missing

The death toll from the Gul Plaza fire has risen sharply in Karachi. Officials confirmed that at least 30 people have died so far. Rescue teams continue searching for more than 80 missing individuals.
Police Surgeon Karachi Dr Summaiya Syed confirmed the updated figures on Wednesday. She said forensic examinations of recovered remains are still underway. Therefore, authorities fear the death toll may increase further.
Rescue workers have expanded search operations inside the building. Teams are now accessing upper floors and the basement. However, heat, smoke, and unstable debris continue to slow progress.

Rescue Efforts and Official Response

The Bomb Disposal Squad has remained on site for a second day. Officials said they are monitoring the situation closely. So far, no evidence of sabotage has emerged.
Authorities explained that the fire spread rapidly through the structure. Investigators will review safety conditions and possible causes. However, no agency has raised suspicion of foul play yet.
Senior officials, including the Karachi Commissioner and Police Chief, visited the site. They inspected damaged areas and recorded statements. They also met affected families and expressed condolences.
The Sindh government has formed an inquiry committee. Commissioner Hasan Naqvi said the investigation will remain transparent. Statements from shopkeepers, rescue teams, and agencies are being collected.

Building Records and Ongoing Investigation

Officials confirmed that Gul Plaza had approved building plans. Records show the structure was regularized in 2003. Authorities said approved documents remain available.
The building housed over a thousand shops across multiple floors. Changes in parking arrangements raised safety concerns. Investigators will examine these issues carefully.
DNA testing continues to identify victims. Authorities have confirmed several identities, including minors. Families have begun receiving bodies from the morgue.
Rescue teams entered the site nearly 40 hours after the blaze. Reigniting flames and collapsing sections complicated operations. Debris removal will begin only after all missing persons are accounted for.
Officials stressed the need for stronger fire safety standards. The inquiry will present findings to the government. Authorities aim to prevent such tragedies in the future.
