A historic Ottoman neighborhood is captivating travelers. Orta Mahalle, in Trabzon’s Akcaabat district, has become a key stop for tourists. Its well-preserved architecture and unique atmosphere draw visitors from around the world.
The area features traditional stone-and-wood houses and cobblestone streets. Designated as an Urban Conservation Area since 1988, its historical character is protected. This careful preservation creates a distinctive and authentic experience.
Tourism here is growing significantly.In 2025, the neighborhood welcomed around 200,000 visitors. This marked a clear increase from approximately 180,000 visitors the previous year.
A Hub for Cultural Tourism
The area successfully blends history with modern amenities. With support from the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the municipality has introduced cafes and boutique hotels. Visitors can enjoy guided tours and taste traditional dishes in restored historic mansions.
Tourists arrive from a diverse range of countries. Key sources include the Middle East, Azerbaijan, Russia, and several European nations like Germany and the Netherlands.
Ambitious Plans Are In Place For The Future
Akcaabat Mayor Osman Nuri Ekim stated the goal is to attract 300,000 to 400,000 visitors by 2026. Furthermore, they aim to extend tourism activity throughout the entire year.
The focus remains on sustainable growth. Ongoing restoration projects will continue without compromising the neighborhood’s valuable cultural identity. Therefore, Orta Mahalle is set to remain a premier destination in the Black Sea region.
