Hojai Rail Collision Kills Wild Elephants in Assam.

A tragic Hojai rail collision killed seven wild Asian elephants in north-eastern India. The incident happened early Saturday in Assam’s Hojai district. Officials confirmed that calves were among the animals lost.

Deadly Wildlife Incident in Assam

Another young elephant survived but suffered injuries. Forest teams quickly reached the site to provide care. However, the impact shocked nearby communities and wildlife groups.
Authorities say the herd crossed the tracks during low-light conditions. As a result, the approaching train had little time to stop. The accident highlights ongoing risks along forest rail corridors.

Train Derailment and Service Disruption

The Northeast Frontier Railway shared details soon after the crash. The driver spotted a large group of animals and applied emergency brakes. However, the train still struck part of the herd.
Five coaches derailed following the impact. Thankfully, no passengers or crew members were hurt. Emergency teams inspected the track and secured the area.
Train services faced disruption throughout the day. Several routes were cancelled or diverted to manage safety. Therefore, passengers experienced delays across the region.
Wildlife experts stress the need for stronger prevention measures. For example, speed restrictions and better monitoring can reduce future risks. In addition, early warning systems may help drivers react sooner.
Assam sits within key wildlife movement zones. These routes allow animals to travel between forest areas. As a result, rail lines often intersect with natural habitats.
Officials say coordination between railway and forest departments remains critical. Improved planning could protect both people and wildlife. The incident serves as a reminder of shared responsibility in sensitive regions.
