Hong Kong Horse Racing Silent After Deadly Fire, Donations to Victims
This Sunday, Hong Kong’s horse racing event at Sha Tin will take place behind closed doors. The decision comes after a devastating fire in Tai Po earlier this week, which tragically killed at least 94 people. The Hong Kong Jockey Club (HKJC) is responding with respect and compassion.
As a tribute to the victims, jockeys will wear black armbands. Additionally, there will be a moment of silence during the race. The HKJC expressed its sorrow, acknowledging the enormous loss caused by the blaze at Wang Fuk Court.
In a statement, the HKJC shared, “We are deeply saddened by the tragic fire in Tai Po and the personal losses many have endured.” The organization emphasized its commitment to supporting the victims.
Financial Support for Fire Victims
In addition to the tribute, the HKJC has pledged to donate all proceeds from the event. They estimate that the total donation will be around HK$70 million ($9 million). This gesture is meant to help those affected by the fire, which is now considered the deadliest in Hong Kong since 1948.
Due to the fire, several other local sporting events, including a trail race and rugby matches, have been postponed or canceled. The city’s sports community is united in its grief, with plans to help those in need.
