Hurtigruten to Sail First 100% Biofuel Voyage in Norway

Hurtigruten is preparing for a groundbreaking moment in sustainable travel. On October 29, 2025, its ship MS Richard With will begin a special voyage along the stunning Norwegian coast. This round trip will cover about 4,000 kilometers, stretching from Bergen in the south to Kirkenes in the north and back again.

Historic Voyage Powered by Waste-Based Fuel

The company has announced that the ship will run entirely on advanced biofuel. The chosen fuel, known as HVO100, comes from waste sources and offers a much cleaner alternative to traditional fossil fuels. In addition, the ship will connect to shore power whenever possible during its stops. This further reduces emissions and highlights a serious commitment to green travel.

Why This Journey Marks a Turning Point

Hurtigruten has already used blended biofuels in parts of its fleet. However, this marks the very first time an entire voyage will be powered by 100 percent advanced biofuel. As a result, greenhouse gas emissions on this journey will drop dramatically. This step shows that long-distance sea travel can become both practical and climate-friendly.

Investments Driving Cleaner Shipping

The company has invested heavily to make this happen. Since 2022, more than €100 million has gone into upgrades that lower both carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxide emissions. These investments have prepared the fleet for a cleaner and more sustainable future.
The Ambitious Sea Zero Project
In addition, Hurtigruten is working on its ambitious Sea Zero project. This plan aims to design ships that create no emissions under regular sailing conditions. Engineers are exploring ways to cut energy use by as much as 40 to 50 percent. The project includes smarter hull designs, advanced sails, and highly efficient propellers.
This pioneering voyage is more than just a test. It represents a major step forward for the cruise industry and global tourism. Travelers now expect meaningful action on climate change, and Hurtigruten is showing what is possible. If successful, the voyage could inspire other operators to follow. Therefore, the company’s efforts may set a new standard for green travel worldwide.
