IB202 Legal Verdict Delivers Justice After 15-Year Battle
The IB202 legal verdict finally brought justice to eight affected families after a 15-year legal struggle. In 2010, Airblue flight ED-202 crashed near Islamabad. The tragedy killed all 152 people on board.
That day, fruit vendor Gohar Rehman saw off his 22-year-old son Irfan at Karachi airport. He asked him to return quickly. However, the flight never reached its destination.
Irfan worked at a garments factory and studied alongside his job. He also supported his father’s small business. His sudden death shattered the family’s stability.
Families Refuse to Accept Silence
Engineer Hamid Junaid also lost his wife, Andaleeb, in the crash. Similarly, Haider Zulfiqar Shah died while returning after his engagement. Some families never even recovered the bodies.
Soon after the crash, the airline offered limited compensation. However, eight families rejected conditional agreements. They believed the issue demanded accountability, not quick settlements.
Lawyer Umar Farooq Adam represented them across multiple courts. He relied on official investigation findings. These reports blamed pilot errors and rule violations.
Airblue argued that local aviation laws limited its liability. However, the court disagreed. It ruled that negligence directly caused the disaster.
Court Decision Sets a Precedent
An Islamabad district court held the airline responsible for its crew’s actions. Judges noted ignored warnings and unsafe landing attempts. As a result, the aircraft struck the Margalla Hills.
The court applied the Air Carriage Act 2012. It calculated compensation using age, income, and expected lifespan. The final amount reached Rs5.4 billion.
Each claimant will receive between Rs140 million and Rs1.1 billion. The IB202 legal verdict now stands as a landmark ruling.
For families like Gohar Rehman’s, the decision restored dignity. They say the fight was never about money. Justice, they insist, finally arrived.
