Indonesia Fights Hajj Scams with New Task Force

Indonesia Fights Hajj Scams with New Task Force

Indonesia launches a special task force. The goal is to prevent Hajj-related scams. The Ministry of Hajj and Umrah announced this on Thursday.
More than 1,200 Indonesians fell victim in 2025. Losses have reached about 92 billion rupiah ($5.4 million). Therefore, authorities are stepping up prevention.

First Flights Depart on April 22

The first special pilgrimage flights leave on April 22. Saudi Arabia granted Indonesia a quota of 221,000 pilgrims for 2026. As a result, strict surveillance begins immediately.
“We will prevent scam practices,” said Deputy Minister Dahnil Anzar Simanjuntak. “Especially through strict checks at departure points.” The task force includes ministry officials and police officers. They will also coordinate with Saudi authorities.

Long Waiting Times Create Risks

Indonesia has around 5.7 million registered Hajj applicants. The waiting period can last up to 26 years. Consequently, many people look for faster options.
Scammers promise fast-track visas. Victims then travel with incorrect visa types. Saudi authorities arrest and deport them for this reason.

Strict Checks at All Airports

The National Police will focus on unauthorized departures. “We will control and verify documents strictly,” said Deputy Chief Dedi Prasetyo. “Firm legal action includes criminal prosecution.”
In addition, the task force will raise public awareness. A new hotline will streamline scam reports. This makes it easier for victims to come forward.

Protecting Pilgrims from High Fees

“This follows the president’s instructions,” Prasetyo added. “We must provide utmost protection for pilgrims.” The public should not be burdened by hefty fees.
In conclusion, Indonesia acts decisively against Hajj scams. Strict airport checks and a dedicated hotline will help. Therefore, pilgrims can travel more safely.
