IOM Mobilizes Early Response as Hurricane Melissa Threatens Jamaica

The Hurricane Melissa Jamaica crisis is intensifying as the Category 5 storm approaches the island. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) is working swiftly to support Jamaica’s emergency efforts and deliver life-saving aid.

IOM Steps Up Early Response for Jamaica

Hurricane Melissa is already causing severe storm surges along the southern coast. It is expected to bring dangerous winds and up to 750 mm of rainfall over two days. As a result, authorities warn of widespread flooding, landslides, and heavy damage.
Consequently, Government of Jamaica has asked for help from the United Nations and international partners to strengthen its response.

Life-Saving Assistance on the Way

“IOM is committed to helping Jamaica prepare for Hurricane Melissa,” said Natasha Greaves, IOM Jamaica’s Interim Head of Office.
She added that IOM teams and supplies are ready to respond quickly.

IOM is sending emergency items from its Caribbean Logistics Hub in Barbados. The effort is supported by the World Food Programme (WFP). The shipment includes solar lamps, hygiene kits, blankets, repair kits, tarpaulins, and generators. Each item meets Jamaica’s urgent humanitarian needs. The supplies will arrive in Kingston later this week.

In addition, IOM will partner with DHL for customs and transport operations. It will also work with Microsoft to provide satellite mapping technology. This technology will help assess storm damage and guide relief operations.

Meanwhile, teams from across the Caribbean are joining IOM Jamaica to coordinate with national authorities. Their goal is to deliver aid efficiently while supporting Jamaica’s emergency management systems.

Greaves emphasized that IOM’s strong partnerships and regional experience ensure a faster and more effective response. She urged the public to follow evacuation orders and stay alert for official updates.
