The federal government has confirmed plans to launch a modern train service that will connect Islamabad and Rawalpindi in just 20 minutes, according to the Interior Ministry. The project has been described as a transformative step to improve transport between the twin cities and provide relief to daily commuters.
A high-level meeting was chaired by Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi alongside Railways Minister Hanif Abbasi, with State Minister Tallal Chaudhry also present. The officials reviewed the proposal in detail and gave approval for its implementation. The new service will operate between Margalla Station in Islamabad and Saddar Station in Rawalpindi, offering a faster, safer, and more efficient travel option.
The initiative is expected to significantly reduce traffic congestion on main highways and cut fuel consumption, which has been a major concern due to rising costs. Under the plan, the Ministry of Railways will provide the railway tracks, while the Capital Development Authority (CDA) will oversee the operation of the train system. To meet modern standards, new trains will be imported specifically for this project.
Officials revealed that a framework agreement covering technical, operational, and financial aspects of the service will be finalized and signed within a week. Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi highlighted that the project reflects Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s vision of prioritizing public welfare. He emphasized that introducing modern trains will allow thousands of citizens to benefit from better transport facilities.
Railways Minister Hanif Abbasi described the initiative as a “major step for public convenience,” stressing that the service will provide reliable connectivity. Minister Tallal Chaudhry added that affordability and speed will remain central to the plan, ensuring it meets the needs of ordinary passengers. Senior representatives from the Interior Ministry, Railways, CDA, and law enforcement agencies attended the meeting, signaling the government’s commitment to moving the project forward swiftly.
