Israel to Control Southern Lebanon Up to Litani River, Katz Says
Israeli troops will control a large swathe of southern Lebanon. Defence Minister Israel Katz announced the new security zone. It will extend up to the Litani River, about 30km from the border.Displaced residents will not be allowed back until northern Israel is safe. Katz said the move aims to protect Israeli communities from Hezbollah attacks.
Infrastructure Targeted
Five bridges have been blown up in the operation. Katz said Hezbollah used them “for the passage of terrorists and weapons.” Therefore, this Israel southern Lebanon control represents a major escalation.
Ceasefire Collapses
The latest escalation follows Iranian-backed Hezbollah rocket fire into northern Israel. The group acted in retaliation for the killing of Iran’s supreme leader. Near-daily Israeli attacks on Lebanon have continued despite the November 2024 ceasefire. The conflict shows no sign of de-escalation. Regional tensions continue to mount. The Litani River becomes a new front line.
