Istanbul recorded an impressive 13.5 million tourist arrivals during the first nine months of 2025, underscoring its growing position as a leading global travel destination. This surge highlights the city’s ability to attract visitors despite regional challenges and global uncertainties.
Culture and Tourism Minister Mehmet Nuri Ersoy shared the figures during a recent meeting with tourism industry representatives. He noted that Istanbul’s success has been built on a close partnership between government and stakeholders, which has strengthened resilience in the sector. According to Ersoy, tourism today is no longer a rivalry among countries but increasingly a contest between major cities. In this competition, Istanbul is establishing itself as one of the world’s most attractive destinations.
One of the standout drivers of growth has been cruise tourism. Between January and August, nearly 1.5 million cruise passengers arrived at Turkish ports, the highest number seen in more than a decade. Istanbul has benefited significantly from this trend by connecting maritime traffic with its cultural landmarks, historic neighborhoods, and vibrant local experiences.
The city has also gained international recognition since its inclusion in the Michelin Guide in 2022, which has enhanced its culinary reputation. Marketing campaigns such as the “Istanbul My Love” miniseries and cultural events like the Türkiye Cultural Route Festivals have further boosted the city’s visibility worldwide, strengthening both leisure and cultural tourism.
Plans for redevelopment of historic sites are also set to enrich Istanbul’s cultural offerings. The iconic Haydarpaşa and Sirkeci train stations are being transformed into hubs for art, history, and performance, featuring museums, libraries, and an archaeology park. These projects aim to merge Istanbul’s heritage with modern cultural life.
Minister Ersoy stressed that Istanbul should be seen not merely as a transit stop but as a destination in its own right. With strong political support and long-term vision, Türkiye aspires to position Istanbul as the world’s tourism capital and ensure its continued rise on the global stage.
