Jakarta Mosque Explosion Injures Dozens During Friday Prayers
Dozens of people were injured after an explosion struck a mosque in Indonesia’s capital, Jakarta. The blast happened during Friday prayers at a mosque inside a high school complex in North Jakarta.
According to city police chief Asep Edi Suheri, 54 people were admitted to the hospital. The injuries ranged from minor cuts to severe burns, and several victims are still receiving treatment.
17-Year-Old Suspect Under Investigation
Officials identified the suspect as a 17-year-old student. He is currently undergoing surgery for his own injuries, authorities confirmed.
The explosion occurred around 12:15 local time (05:15 GMT) in Kelapa Gading district. Police are now investigating the suspect’s background and possible motives.
Jakarta Metropolitan Police teams have collected evidence from the site. In addition, they are interviewing witnesses and reviewing school security footage to understand how the incident unfolded.
Police Continue Investigation
Authorities have not confirmed whether the explosion was accidental or deliberate. However, officials assured the public that there is no wider threat at this stage.
Emergency services responded quickly to the scene, helping evacuate injured victims and securing the area. As a result, the situation was brought under control within an hour.
