Karachi Consulate Shooting Sparks Probe After Marines Open Fire
Karachi consulate shooting shocked the city after US Marines opened fire during violent protests. Demonstrators stormed the compound on Sunday following reports about Iran’s leader. The incident left 11 people dead and triggered a nationwide security crackdown.
Marines Open Fire as Protest Turns Violent
Protesters breached the outer wall of the US Consulate in Karachi. Witnesses heard gunfire and saw tear gas in nearby streets. Chants against the United States and Israel filled the air as tensions escalated.
Two US officials confirmed that Marines fired rounds during the breach. However, they could not confirm whether Marine bullets caused any deaths. Officials also remained unsure if private guards or local police fired shots.
A Karachi police official said gunfire came from inside the compound. Meanwhile, a Sindh government spokesperson stated that “security” personnel opened fire but did not clarify their identity. As a result, questions about responsibility continue to grow. Social media videos showed chaos at the scene. One clip appeared to show an armed protester firing toward the building. Other footage showed injured demonstrators fleeing as shots rang out.
Investigation and Political Reaction
Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Memon announced a joint investigation team. He said officials expect a fact-finding report within 15 days. Investigators will review CCTV footage and forensic evidence to determine whose bullets struck whom. Police have filed three cases against unidentified protesters. Authorities accused them of vandalism, arson, and armed violence near the consulate and Native Jetty Bridge.
In addition, authorities banned large gatherings in Karachi, Punjab, and Islamabad. Religious leaders, however, have urged more protests despite restrictions. US missions in Karachi, Lahore, and Islamabad remain under tight security. Police continue to block roads leading to the consulate as tensions stay high.
