Karachi Sees Sharp Rise in Viral Flu Cases as Winter Nears
As temperatures begin to drop, Karachi is experiencing a noticeable rise in viral flu cases. Clinics and hospitals are reporting an unusual surge in patients suffering from fever, cough, sore throat, and body aches. Many families have multiple members falling ill at once, though most recover without major complications.
Dr. Imran Sarwar Sheikh from Dr. Ruth Pfau Civil Hospital shared that the hospital receives between 150 and 200 flu patients daily. Around 1,200 to 1,600 people visit the emergency unit every day, many seeking relief from high fever and fatigue. He noted that people often visit public hospitals for free testing and quicker treatment.
Dr. Yahya Tunio from Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre confirmed a 5 to 10 percent increase in viral flu and eye infection cases. He explained that such seasonal spikes occur every year before winter. Similarly, Dr. Sajjad Siddiqui added that changing temperatures create ideal conditions for germs to spread. However, fewer than five percent of his patients develop severe complications.
Dengue and Flu Awareness
Doctors are also warning the public about dengue and malaria, which share similar symptoms with viral flu. According to Dr. Najum F. Mahmudi, ruling out these infections through lab tests is essential. Dengue, in particular, can dangerously reduce platelet counts.
General physician Dr. Altaf Hussain Khatri explained that most viral illnesses are self-limiting. He advised patients to rest, stay hydrated, and take medicines for symptom relief. Antibiotics do not help against viral infections. Warning signs include persistent fever, chest pain, and breathing difficulty. Immediate medical attention is advised if symptoms worsen.
Health experts emphasize preventive care and hygiene to curb the spread. Early testing and proper rest can make recovery quicker and safer for everyone.
