KIRAN Hospital Karachi Doubles Capacity with Second Halcyon LINAC for Cancer

Karachi’s premier public cancer hospital has taken a major technological leap forward. KIRAN Hospital, operated by the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC), has officially inaugurated its second Halcyon Linear Accelerator (LINAC). This state-of-the-art radiotherapy machine significantly enhances the precision and capacity of cancer care.
The new addition brings the hospital’s total number of linear accelerators to four. This expansion nearly doubles the facility’s daily treatment capacity, now aiming to provide life-saving radiotherapy for up to 400 patients every day. The goal is to drastically reduce wait times and provide faster access to critical care.

Advanced Technology for Precision and Comfort

The Halcyon system represents the forefront of radiotherapy technology. It utilizes advanced techniques like Intensity-Modulated Radiotherapy (IMRT) and Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy (VMAT). These methods allow radiation oncologists to shape radiation beams with extreme accuracy, targeting tumors while minimizing exposure to surrounding healthy tissue.
Beyond clinical precision, the machine is designed with the patient’s experience in mind. It features a more comfortable treatment environment with quieter operation and enhanced communication features. This patient-centered design helps reduce anxiety and improves the overall treatment journey.

A Commitment to Accessible, Cutting-Edge Care

Dr. Muhammad Asghar, a spokesperson for KIRAN Hospital, emphasized that this technological advancement is about expanding access. “This will allow more patients to access cutting-edge care,” he stated.
The acquisition of this multi-million-dollar machine was made possible through crucial philanthropic and institutional support. Key funding partners include the KIRAN Patients Welfare Society (KPWS) and the Strategic Plans Division (SPD). Their contributions help ensure that advanced cancer treatment remains free for deserving patients who cannot afford it.

Solidifying a Leadership Position in Oncology

This installation is part of KIRAN Hospital’s ongoing strategy to maintain its position as a national leader in cancer treatment. By continuously investing in the latest technology and expanding its facilities, the hospital aims to set new standards for oncology care in Pakistan.
The expansion signals a strong commitment to combating cancer through innovation, capacity building, and a core mission of serving the public with world-class, accessible medical science.
