Lake Baikal Tragedy: 7 Chinese Tourists, Driver Die in Frozen Lake Crash

Divers have recovered eight bodies from a frozen lake. The victims include seven Chinese tourists and their Russian driver. Their mini-bus plunged through the ice into Lake Baikal in Siberia.One Chinese tourist managed to escape the sinking vehicle. Therefore, he is the sole survivor of this tragic accident. The bus went down at a depth of 18 meters.

Recovery Operation

Governor Igor Kobzev of the Irkutsk region expressed his condolences. He offered sympathy to the families and friends of the victims. The recovery operation required specialized equipment. Divers used underwater cameras to locate the bodies in the dark water.

A Popular but Dangerous Destination

Lake Baikal is the world’s deepest lake. Its maximum depth reaches an incredible 1,642 meters. It attracts many tourists each year. However, the lake freezes during harsh Siberian winters. As a result, it has seen several deadly accidents over the years. This Lake Baikal tourist tragedy serves as a grim reminder. Frozen lakes can be beautiful but treacherous. Safety remains paramount when traveling on ice.
