Laughing Gas Shows Rapid Relief for Depression in Major New Study

A major new study highlights nitrous oxide as a fast-acting depression treatment. The gas is often called laughing gas. However, researchers now link it to rapid mood improvement.Scientists found relief can appear within one day. As a result, this discovery offers hope for people with severe depression.

Why New Depression Treatments Matter

Many people live with major depressive disorder. Unfortunately, common antidepressants do not work for everyone. Nearly half of patients see limited improvement. This condition is known as treatment-resistant depression. Therefore, experts continue searching for better options.
Researchers from the University of Birmingham led a large meta-analysis. They reviewed seven clinical trials and several protocols. All studies examined medical use of nitrous oxide. The results appeared in the journal eBioMedicine. The analysis focused on adults with major or treatment-resistant depression.
Several trials used a single inhaled dose. The gas concentration reached 50 percent. Within 24 hours, many participants reported an improved mood. However, these effects often faded after one week. Therefore, one session alone may not be enough.

Repeated Doses Show Lasting Benefits

Researchers also studied repeated dosing over weeks. In these cases, improvements lasted longer. As a result, ongoing treatment may provide better outcomes. Scientists believe nitrous oxide affects brain glutamate receptors. This process resembles how ketamine works.

Safety and Side Effects

Most participants tolerated the treatment well. Some felt nausea or dizziness. However, symptoms resolved quickly.Importantly, researchers found no short-term safety concerns. Still, longer studies remain essential.Experts see strong early evidence. However, they stress the need for larger trials. Researchers are now preparing the first NHS study of this treatment. This work may expand options for diverse communities. Ultimately, it could reduce gaps in mental health care.
