Libya’s Tourism Makes a Cautious Comeback with 60% Visitor Surge

Libya is experiencing a significant resurgence in its tourism sector. The country is making a concerted effort to attract more international visitors. This follows a period of over a decade dominated by conflict and instability.
The numbers show a clear positive trend. In the first half of 2025, Libya saw a 60% increase in visitor numbers compared to the previous year. Adventure travel companies report booking increases of up to 200% for their Libyan tours. This renewed interest signals a tentative but hopeful recovery.
The growth is attributed to several key factors. These include the introduction of a streamlined e-visa system and a period of relative stability. Renovations of major archaeological sites and Tripoli’s Old City, supported by UNESCO, are also major draws. The reopening of the National Museum after 14 years marks another milestone.

Adventure Travelers Lead the Return

Specialist tour operators are at the forefront of this return. Companies like Untamed Borders have resumed trips to areas inaccessible since 2011. Their tours now include the Saharan south and, for the first time in over a decade, eastern Libya.
These tours offer access to Libya’s extraordinary historical wealth. Highlights include the UNESCO World Heritage sites of Cyrene, Sabratha, and Leptis Magna. Travelers also explore ancient desert towns, rock art, and the vast landscapes of the Jebel Acacus.
“The country has a wealth of fantastic sites for the curious traveler,” said James Willcox, founder of Untamed Borders. He notes visitors can experience world-class Roman ruins and authentic Saharan experiences with very few other tourists. This unique sense of discovery is a key attraction.

A Cautious Optimism for the Future

Despite the progress, travel to Libya remains complex. The UK, US, and other governments still advise against all but essential travel due to ongoing security concerns. Operators stress that trips are for the adventurous and well-informed.
However, the “green shoots of progress” are undeniable. The government reports over 282,000 visitors to key archaeological sites in early 2025. New hotels are under construction, and events like an annual desert rally aim to boost visibility.
Looking ahead, a major draw is planned for 2027. Untamed Borders will run a special tour to eastern Libya. The trip is timed to coincide with the longest land-based solar eclipse in our lifetime, highlighting Libya’s unique potential.
