Mangaluru to Become Permanent Heli-Tourism Hub After Trial Success
Mangaluru is aiming high to boost its coastal tourism. Following a hugely successful trial, the city plans to establish a permanent heli-tourism hub. The goal is to connect sacred pilgrim centers and scenic coastal destinations via helicopter.
The experimental joyrides during the recent Karavali Utsava were a major hit. Over 1,032 passengers took 7-minute flights priced at ₹3,500 each. This strong demand has convinced the Dakshina Kannada district administration to pursue a permanent service.
Solving a Key Problem for International Tourists
A permanent heli-service would solve a critical logistical issue. International tourists arriving on luxury cruises often have very short stays. They currently cannot visit inland attractions like Chikkamagaluru due to long road travel times.
A helicopter link would make these Western Ghats destinations accessible in under 30 minutes. This transforms a brief port visit into an opportunity for a rich inland experience. Consequently, it significantly boosts the region’s appeal to the global luxury travel market.
Benefits Beyond Tourism: Medical and Regional Connectivity
The vision extends far beyond tourism. Mangaluru’s renowned private hospitals could use the permanent helipads for critical emergencies. This includes rapid transfers for cardiac patients and creating aerial “green corridors” for organ transplants.
The network would also improve regional connectivity. It could link remote towns like Puttur and Sullia directly to the city’s medical and economic hub. Therefore, it serves both humanitarian and logistical needs for the entire district.
Building on a Strong Economic Foundation
Mangaluru is already a critical nexus for education, healthcare, and maritime trade. This new initiative is seen as the “missing link” in its economic evolution. It aligns with a new specialized coastal tourism policy from the Karnataka government aimed at attracting global investment.
The district is now evaluating formal proposals from private helicopter operators. The ultimate goal is a scheduled service with regular sorties to places like Kudremukh National Park. This ambitious plan positions Mangaluru as a pioneering high-end travel destination.
