ML-1 Karachi Rohri Project Set to Break Ground in 2026
The ML-1 Karachi Rohri project has taken a key step forward. Groundwork for the section will begin in July 2026. The update came during a high level infrastructure review meeting in Islamabad. Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal led the session with senior officials present.
He urged all ministries to focus on speed, quality, and realistic funding. As a result, projects critical to national growth remain on track.
Railway Projects Gain Momentum
Officials shared progress on major railway upgrades. The ML-1 Karachi Rohri corridor remains a top priority for rail modernization. In addition, authorities reviewed plans to upgrade 884 kilometers of Main Line-3. This upgrade will improve safety and travel efficiency.
The Thar Coal Railway Connectivity project also received attention. It supports energy supply and industrial growth across regions. The project costs Rs53.7 billion and includes three construction packages. Work is expected to finish by June 2026.
Therefore, the minister asked for a clear three year funding plan. He stressed that national assets must meet global quality standards.
Highways and Water Projects Stay in Focus
The meeting also reviewed 71 highway projects under PSDP 2025-26. These projects carry a combined cost of Rs3,407 billion. The Sukkur, Hyderabad Motorway must finish within three years. Meanwhile, Karakoram Highway Phase-2 work will wrap up by 2028.
Under public-private partnerships, several roads received priority status. These include routes in Punjab, Balochistan, and northern regions. Water sector development remained equally important. Authorities reviewed 34 water projects worth Rs1,848 billion.
Key initiatives include major dams, hydropower plants, and Karachi’s K-IV water supply project. These efforts strengthen climate resilience. The minister highlighted Mohmand Dam as essential for flood control and energy. As a result, water security remains central to economic stability.
The government reaffirmed its commitment to inclusive development. Integrated planning and accountability will help deliver long-term benefits nationwide.
