NEPRA Fines Power Firms Rs57.5mn After Electrocution Deaths

The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has imposed fines totaling Rs 57.5 million on three major power distribution companies. This decision comes after 30 people lost their lives in electrocution incidents during the 2023–24 fiscal year. NEPRA found the companies directly responsible for failing to maintain proper safety standards.
LESCO faced the largest fine of Rs 30 million. GEPCO was fined Rs 17.5 million, and FESCO Rs 10 million. The fatalities included 13 under LESCO, 9 under GEPCO, and 8 under FESCO. NEPRA has instructed these companies to compensate the victims’ families according to the relevant policies.
Earlier, NEPRA issued show-cause notices and held formal hearings. The companies could not convince the authority that their preventive measures were effective. As a result, the regulator emphasized that timely action could have prevented these tragedies. Safety protocols were not adequately implemented, NEPRA noted, leading to avoidable deaths.

Companies Urged to Improve Safety

NEPRA has directed the companies to upgrade safety measures immediately. Regular inspections, maintenance, and timely repairs are mandatory. In addition, authorities warned of stricter actions if companies fail to comply. Experts also advise that public awareness is key. People should stay alert around power lines and report unsafe conditions.

Fuel Charges Adjustment Update

Separately, NEPRA approved the September 2025 Fuel Charges Adjustment (FCA) for consumers. The regulator granted Rs 0.4812 per kilowatt-hour relief. This adjustment will appear in November 2025 electricity bills. The FCA will also apply to K-Electric users under the tariff rationalization approved by the Economic Coordination Committee in August 2025. Consumers can expect slightly lower bills as a result.
The fines and FCA announcement highlight NEPRA’s dual focus on public safety and fair electricity pricing. For consumers and companies alike, vigilance and compliance remain crucial to prevent accidents and manage costs effectively.
