New AI Reads Brain MRIs in Seconds to Flag Emergencies, Study Shows

A new AI system reads brain MRI scans in just seconds. Developed at the University of Michigan, it quickly flags life-threatening conditions. This could greatly speed up emergency care. The technology is called Prima. It identified neurological issues with 97.5% accuracy in a recent study. Importantly, it also determined which patients needed urgent attention.

How the Prima AI System Works

Prima is a vision language model. Therefore, it processes images and text together in real time. It was trained on over 200,000 real-world MRI scans and patient histories. As a result, it works like a radiologist. The AI integrates medical history with scan data for a full health picture. This broad training helps it perform many prediction tasks well.

Tackling MRI Backlogs and Staff Shortages

Global demand for MRIs is growing fast. However, neuroradiology services struggle to keep up. This causes delays and strains healthcare workers. Prima can help reduce this burden. For example, it automatically alerts the right specialist after a scan. This enables faster action for critical cases like strokes.

The Future of AI in Healthcare

Researchers call Prima a “co-pilot” for medical imaging. Similar to drafting an email with AI, it assists in interpreting scans. The team believes it can eventually adapt to X-rays and ultrasounds. In addition, future work will add more patient data to boost accuracy. This approach mirrors real clinical practice. The goal is to streamline care without sacrificing precision
