NHS Faces Double Whammy as Flu Cases Rise and Strikes Near

Health Secretary Wes Streeting says he is deeply concerned about an NHS double whammy. He warned that rising flu cases and upcoming resident doctor strikes could create a severe challenge. As a result, he urged the public to stay alert to the growing pressure.

Rising Pressure on Hospitals

Streeting shared his fears during an interview with LBC. He said the NHS is facing “the worst pressure since Covid.” His comments reflect the strain already visible across many hospitals. In addition, senior officials say the system is struggling to cope with daily demand.
NHS England reported an average of 2,660 flu patients in hospital each day last week. This number equals the capacity of three full hospitals. Therefore, leaders believe the situation requires urgent attention. They say early treatment and preventive care can ease some of the pressure.

Strikes Expected to Add Stress

A five-day strike by resident doctors is set to begin on 17 December. This group, previously known as junior doctors, plans to walk out over pay disputes. However, the strike is expected to leave hospitals short-staffed during a critical winter period.
Streeting said he respects the right to strike. He also noted that negotiations must continue to protect patient care. For example, he hopes ongoing talks can prevent long delays for treatment. In addition, he believes cooperation is key to reducing risks for vulnerable patients.
Hospitals are preparing emergency plans to manage the disruption. Teams are reviewing staffing levels and adjusting services. They want to ensure safe care even during peak pressure. However, many leaders admit the combination of illness and industrial action may still delay treatment.
The NHS continues to ask people to seek help early. Officials say prompt action can reduce hospital admissions. They also encourage the public to follow flu prevention guidance.
