No Cables Needed: Porsche’s New Wireless EV Charger

Porsche is taking a step toward greater convenience in electric mobility with the introduction of its new wireless charging system, designed to work much like the technology used in smartphones. The system will first be available on the all-electric Cayenne, which is scheduled to debut in late 2025, with sales beginning in 2026.

The 11 kW wireless charger eliminates the need for plugging in. Drivers simply park over a charging plate installed on the garage floor, and the car begins to charge automatically. Porsche plans to showcase the technology for the first time with a Cayenne Electric prototype at the IAA Mobility 2025 show in Munich.

The setup consists of two components: a 110-pound ground plate connected to the household grid, and a receiver plate integrated into the Cayenne’s underbody. The ground plate is equipped with air cooling to maintain performance and is built to withstand extreme climates, functioning in temperatures from -40°F to 122°F.

To ensure safety, the system includes motion and foreign object detection, preventing accidental interference while charging. Porsche has emphasized that the technology will be practical for daily use, offering a reliable alternative to traditional cable charging.

Sales of the wireless charger are expected to begin in 2026 through Porsche Centers and the company’s online shop. Industry analysts see the innovation as part of a growing trend among automakers to simplify the EV ownership experience and encourage wider adoption of electric vehicles.

By combining efficiency, safety, and convenience, Porsche’s wireless charging platform could redefine how drivers interact with their EVs. The launch of the Cayenne Electric with this technology will mark an important milestone for both the brand and the broader luxury EV market.
