OpenAI Introduces Age-Verification and Parental Controls for ChatGPT

OpenAI has announced new safeguards for ChatGPT aimed at protecting younger users, particularly teenagers. The company is developing an automated age-estimation system designed to identify whether a user is likely under 18. If the system cannot determine the user’s age with confidence, they will be directed to a more restricted version of ChatGPT, tailored specifically for teens.
In addition, OpenAI confirmed that in “certain cases or countries,” users may be required to provide official identification to prove they are adults. This measure underscores the company’s growing emphasis on responsible AI usage, particularly in regions with stricter online safety regulations.
A major feature of the update is the introduction of parental controls, which are expected to launch by the end of September. Parents will be able to link their own accounts to their teens’ accounts (ages 13–17) and set custom usage limits or even impose “blackout hours” to restrict late-night use. Alerts will also be available if the system detects that a teen might be in distress while interacting with ChatGPT.
Teens between 13 and 17 will still have access to the platform, but under stricter content policies and behavior rules than adult users. Children under 13, however, remain barred from using ChatGPT in line with OpenAI’s Terms of Service.
The announcement highlights OpenAI’s efforts to strike a balance between accessibility and safety. With AI technology becoming increasingly integrated into education and daily life, these measures reflect a proactive approach to safeguarding younger audiences while still allowing them to benefit from responsible AI use.
