Pakistan, 15 Nations Urge Protection of Global Sumud Flotilla to Gaza Joint Call Demands Respect for International Law and Safe Passage of Aid

Pakistan and 15 other countries expressed concern over the security of the Global Sumud Flotilla, a civil society initiative carrying humanitarian aid to Gaza. In a joint statement, the foreign ministers of Pakistan, Bangladesh, Brazil, Colombia, Indonesia, Ireland, Libya, Malaysia, Maldives, Mexico, Oman, Qatar, Slovenia, South Africa, Spain and Türkiye said the flotilla aimed to deliver essential supplies and raise awareness about the urgent humanitarian crisis in Gaza. The ministers affirmed that both objectives — peace and humanitarian aid delivery — align with international law, including humanitarian principles, and are supported by their governments. They called on all parties to refrain from unlawful or violent acts against the flotilla and emphasized accountability for any violation of international law, including attacks in international waters or the illegal detention of participants. The statement reiterated the collective demand for respect of human rights and the safe, unhindered passage of the humanitarian mission.
The Global Sumud Flotilla, carrying food, water, medicine, and other vital supplies, began the final leg of its route after departing Tunisian ports this weekend. The first of more than 40 boats departed Gammarth port, while the last set sail from Bizerte on September 15. Earlier, 16 of the fleet’s original 24 boats resumed their eastward journey from Barcelona after a weeklong stopover in Tunis. Severe storms damaged several vessels before reaching Tunis, leaving them unable to continue, but the flotilla was reinforced by new boats and over 50 additional passengers who completed mandatory non-violence training before joining. Organizers said the mission seeks to open a humanitarian corridor and challenge Israel’s blockade of Gaza, which international law deems illegal. Reports indicate at least 422 people in Gaza have died from malnutrition since famine was declared in August, highlighting the urgency of delivering life-saving assistance through this civil society effort.
