Pakistan Joins Fastest Undersea Cable
Pakistan has achieved a major digital milestone with the onboarding of the Pakistan undersea cable connection SEA-ME-WE 6. This marks the country’s third international cable system in a single year. Federal IT and Telecom Minister Shaza Fatima confirmed the development, calling it a key step toward stronger global connectivity and higher internet capacity.
The new system follows the arrivals of Africa-1 and 2Africa cables. As a result, Pakistan is experiencing one of its fastest periods of subsea infrastructure growth. Transworld Associates (TWA), the landing partner, will initially add 4 terabits per second (Tbps) of capacity. This increases the current 13.2 Tbps bandwidth by roughly 40 percent.
Advanced Technology and Digital Impact
Stretching 21,700 kilometres, SEA-ME-WE 6 connects Pakistan to countries between Singapore and France. The network has a minimum design capacity of 132 Tbps across 10 fiber pairs. Therefore, it can handle large-scale data flows for businesses, cloud platforms, and Pakistan’s digital economy.
In addition, TWA is building a Tier III data centre in Karachi. It will connect to major subsea systems, including SMW-6, SMW-5, TW1, and 2Africa. The centre supports high-density AI workloads, offering secure and scalable hosting for national and international operations.
The facility is scheduled to open in January 2026. Its Tier III certification ensures redundancy, high availability, and fault tolerance. This makes it a central hub for cloud infrastructure, enterprise networks, and content delivery services. Pakistan’s digital and AI-focused ecosystem is expected to grow significantly as a result.
