Pakistan Launches Smart Meter Rollout to Boost Power Efficiency

The Ministry of Energy (Power Division) has launched a large-scale rollout of smart meters across all electricity distribution companies (Discos) in Pakistan. Officials call it a major step toward better customer service and operational efficiency.
According to Power Division spokesperson Zafaryab Khan, metering plays a vital role as the main link between the customer and the service provider.

Digitalization Drive and Cost Reduction

In line with the ministry’s declaration of 2025–26 as the Year of Customer Service Improvement, Discos have started a full digitalization drive to modernize infrastructure. This initiative aims to ensure real-time data access, greater transparency, and an improved customer experience.
Recognising that high smart meter prices were slowing progress, the Power Division intervened to rationalise costs. It reduced the price of single-phase smart meters from Rs20,000 to about Rs15,000, bringing them closer to global benchmarks. Officials estimate that this cost reduction will save the country around Rs25 billion each year, based on five million meter replacements annually.

Benefits for Consumers and Discos

The new smart meters will allow consumers to track electricity use in real time through mobile apps. This technology will help people control energy consumption, manage bills effectively, and access accurate, tamper-proof readings. It will also enable future prepaid services.
For Discos, the system will improve billing accuracy, speed up complaint resolution, detect outages faster, and strengthen operational safety.
The ministry says the smart meter rollout marks a major milestone in Pakistan’s power sector reforms. It supports the government’s goal to digitalize power distribution and build a transparent, customer-focused electricity network.
