Pakistan Makes History With Cross-Border Telesurgery at Lyari Hospital

Pakistan has entered a new era of healthcare with cross-border telesurgery. Doctors completed a gynecological operation at Lyari General Hospital in Karachi. Surgeons based in Kuwait guided the procedure remotely.

Pakistan Reaches Medical Milestone

This historic surgery marked the first time Pakistan carried out an operation across national borders. As a result, the country demonstrated strong progress in digital healthcare. Patients now have access to advanced treatment without traveling abroad.
The Kuwaiti surgical team operated from nearly 1,600 kilometers away. However, the connection remained smooth throughout the procedure. Doctors used an internet speed of 30 megabytes per second.
In addition, the system recorded a delay of only 30 microseconds. This near-instant response allowed precise movements during surgery. Therefore, patient safety and accuracy remained high.

Modern Facilities and Lower Costs

A ceremony followed the successful operation at the hospital. Sindh Health Minister Dr Azra Fazal Pechuho attended the event. She inaugurated several new medical facilities on the same day.
These upgrades included a modern mortuary and a forensic section. Advanced laboratories for microbiology, biochemistry, and pathology also opened. Moreover, a dedicated lab now offers hands-on training for medical students.
Dr Pechuho highlighted the financial benefits of robotic surgery. She said such procedures usually cost around Rs400,000 per patient. However, the new system reduces expenses significantly.
Consultant Gynecologist Oncologist Dr Anjum Rehman shared further details. He explained that doctors now perform three to four robotic surgeries daily. Each procedure costs about Rs150,000.
As a result, more patients can access quality care at affordable rates. This achievement also strengthens Pakistan’s medical reputation globally. Experts believe cross-border telesurgery will transform future healthcare delivery.
