Pakistan Petroleum Subsidy Policy: Temporary Relief as IMF Pushes Reforms

Pakistan Petroleum Subsidy Policy: Temporary Relief as IMF Pushes Reforms

Pakistan petroleum subsidy policy remains temporary, officials confirmed during recent talks with the IMF. The government will adjust fuel prices based on global oil trends. Therefore, petrol and diesel rates may change frequently. Officials said this approach supports economic stability while meeting IMF conditions.
Finance Ministry representatives shared this plan during discussions. They explained that Pakistan must follow its loan agreement rules. However, the IMF raised concerns about long-term subsidies. It urged the government to focus on fiscal discipline and reduce financial risks.

Relief Measures for Citizens

To ease pressure on households, the government increased BISP payments. The quarterly stipend will rise by Rs 5,000 starting January 2027. As a result, beneficiaries will receive Rs 19,500 instead of Rs 14,500. This step aims to support nearly 12 million families across the country.
In addition, the government is consulting provinces to expand relief. For example, motorcycle and rickshaw drivers may receive targeted subsidies. These groups face daily fuel expenses. Meanwhile, authorities decided not to tax fertilizers and agricultural chemicals for now. They will review the Federal Excise Duty in the next budget cycle.

Global Crisis and Economic Impact

The ongoing Middle East conflict has increased global energy prices. As a result, oil, gas, and fertilizer costs have surged sharply. The IMF, World Bank, and International Energy Agency formed a joint task force. This group will assess risks and suggest policy responses.
An IMF spokesperson warned about rising challenges for developing countries. Supply chain disruptions and currency pressures may drive inflation higher. Therefore, global economic growth could slow. Central banks may also tighten policies to stabilize markets and control price increases.
