Pakistan Railways Launches Reform Package to Modernize Services and Boost Freight

Pakistan Railways is embarking on a major transformation. A comprehensive reform package aims to make the department profitable, modern, and passenger-centric. The focus is on revitalizing freight operations, expanding passenger services, and upgrading infrastructure nationwide.
The wide-ranging measures target long-term financial sustainability. Strengthening the freight sector is a top priority. New freight wagons have already joined the fleet.
Dedicated freight corridors are under development to speed up cargo movement. Steps are being taken to improve cargo handling and reduce turnaround time. Strategic partnerships with major bulk clients are being built.

Digital and Operational Improvements

Online freight booking has been introduced for customer convenience. Freight and cargo train operations have expanded significantly. Freight wagons are now outsourced to improve efficiency.
The results are already measurable. Average freight payload increased from 1,800 tons in 2023 to 2,400 tons in 2024. This marks a significant operational improvement in just one year.

Passenger Services Upgraded

Passenger operations are now running at full capacity. The number of coaches on key trains has increased from 15 to 19. Ten new passenger trains have been launched in recent months.
Onboard comfort is receiving serious attention. Modern dining cars and refurbished coaches are being introduced on major routes. LED screens with pre-loaded entertainment keep passengers engaged during journeys.
Water dispensers and enhanced cleaning services improve the travel experience. Premium dining cars now operate on additional routes. Seven premium trains offer complimentary services including high tea, bedding, newspapers, hygiene kits, and mineral water.

Station Facilities Modernized

Major stations are getting significant upgrades. Escalators have been installed at key stations in Karachi and Lahore. Information desks and free Wi-Fi services are now available at stations handling nearly 80 percent of passenger traffic nationwide.
Cleanliness standards are improving through professional partnerships. Agreements have been signed with leading municipal waste management companies. These cover Karachi, Lahore, Rawalpindi, Faisalabad, and Multan.
Waiting halls at major stations have also been modernized. Karachi, Lahore, Peshawar, and Rawalpindi now offer improved facilities for waiting passengers. The upgrades are part of a nationwide modernization plan.

A Vision for the Future

This reform package represents a new direction for Pakistan Railways. By strengthening freight operations, the department builds a sustainable financial foundation. Improved passenger services attract more travelers and increase revenue.
Modernized stations create positive first impressions for passengers. Digital services meet the expectations of today’s travelers. The combination of operational efficiency and customer focus positions Pakistan Railways for long-term success.
The transformation is already showing results. With continued implementation, the department is on track to become a modern, profitable, and passenger-centric national transport system.
